Installing MacTeX All binaries in MacTeX-2021 are universal, with code for both Arm and Intel processors. The same source code is used to compile both types of code, so Apple's Arm and Intel machines are on exactly the same footing. After downloading, move the file MacTeX.pkg to the desktop or another convenient spot,and double click it to install. Follow the straightforward instructions. Installation on a recent Macintoshtakes about ten minutes. When installation is complete, go to /Applications/TeX and read the documentREAD ME FIRST installed there, which explains how to find and use LaTeX. A copy of this document is availablehere. The installer presents a Welcome page. Then it presents a ReadMe page with more information.It presents a Software License page, and then a Final Page; clicking the 'Install' button on this page will start the actual installation. The final page also has a 'Customize' button, which leads to a panel allowing users to decide which pieces to install: Ghostscript, the Ghostscript Library, the GUI applications, and TeX Live itself. Most users will take the standard installation and ignore 'Customize'. When Ghostscript is first installed, a symbolic link named gs is created in /usr/local/bin. If X11 is present, gs points to gs-X11; otherwise it points to gs-noX11. If you are having trouble downloading MacTeX, note that the download link points to a 'multiplexer' site which parcels out requests to various up-to-date CTAN mirrors. Occasionally users have trouble getting the package from this multiplexer. In that case, choose a specific mirror on this mirror page. If you are still unable to download MacTeX-2021 after trying several specific mirrors, and your md5 sum is always incorrect, there is almost nothing we can do to help. The TeX User Group does not run the distribution servers; they are maintained by an entirely separate organization called CTAN. Complaining to us that your download always fails is a waste of time. Updating Various Pieces After Installation A small number of users like to keep several versions of TeX Live available, even when they buy a new computer running the latest macOS. This is certainly possible because older versions of TeX Live continue to work on new systems, and versions containing only Intel code run fine on Arm machines. The old version can be installed on the new computer by copying it from an older machine, or byobtaining it from CTAN. For details, visit the web page . There is one complication. TeX Live Utility can update an old distribution to the version just before that version was retired. But this will fail for TeX Live 2019 or older versions, if installed on Big Sur or later versions of macOS. The reason is that TeX Live Utility calls the program tlmgr in the older distribution, and this program depends on various utilities in that older distribution. One of these utilities determines the operating system being run and expects a number starting with 10, like 10.5, 10.7, or 10.13. But Big Sur returns a number starting with 11. This bug was discovered and fixed in TeX Live 2020 within a week of the initial first beta of Big Sur in June, 2020, and thus long before the release of Big Sur to the public. But TUG does not fix bugs in older versions of TeX Live.Sometimes at the end of installation, the installer will report 'The installation failedThe Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.'and a space. Then drag the install package icon 'MacTeX.pkg' and drop it on the Terminal window.Push RETURN. MacTeX-2019 works fine on Catalina once it is installed. When Catalina was first released to developers, Apple said that install packages for Catalina must be notarized and software installed must adopt a hardened runtime. These conditions hold for BasicTeX-2019 and Ghostscript, but not for MacTeX-2019. However, the requirements have been turned off for most betas of Catalina and seem to be still off in the release version, so MacTeX-2019 should install without trouble. In one beta version of Catalina, perhaps beta 5, the restriction was turned on and the MacTeX-2019 install package refused to install.An experimental notarized version of MacTeX-2019 installed fine during that betaperiod and is available at http://tug.org/~koch/MacTeX-2019.pkg.
